Biography of Nathuram Godse(19 मई 1910 - 15 नवंबर 1949)

Nathuram Vinayak Godse was a Hindu nationalist. Who shot Gandhi thrice in the chest on 30 January 1948 at point-blank range in New Delhi. So he was the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. Godse believed that Gandhi supported the political demands of the Muslims of India during the partition of India.

 

Birth:

Nathuram Vinayakrao Godse was born on 19 May 1910 in a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family. His father’s name was Vinayak Vamanrao Godse who was a postal worker, his mother was Lakshmi (Nav Godavari). Godse’s birth name was Ramchandra. Before Godse was born, his parents had three sons and a daughter, all three boys who died in infancy.

 

Godse attended the local school in Baramati until the fifth standard, after which he was sent to live with an aunt in Pune so that he could attend an English language school. Godse dropped out of high school and became an activist with Hindu nationalist organizations Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Hindu Mahasabha.

Nathuram Godse joined the RSS in 1932 as a Sangh worker in Sangli (Maharashtra). During this time, Godse and MS Golwalkar worked together and translated Babarao Savarkar’s book “Rashtra Mimamsa” into English. Godse formed his organization “Hindu Rashtra Dal” on the Vijayadashami day of 1942.

 

Godse’s 1946 claim is also refuted by his earlier statement in Marathi after Gandhi’s assassination, where he says that when he joined the Hindu Mahasabha, “I remained active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.”

 

Gandhi’s Assassination:

30 January 1948 when Gandhiji was offering evening prayer as usual. At that time, at around 5:15, Godse comes and Gandhiji comes directly to him and fires 3 bullets in his chest. The pistol with which Gandhi was fired was the Bieratta M 1934 semi-automatic pistol.

 

After the death of Gandhiji, riots started in the country. There was a lot of fighting between the Brahmins and Muslims. Brahmins’ houses were burnt in this riot, mainly in the Sangli and Miraj regions of Maharashtra.

 

Death sentence to Nathuram Godse:

Godse was put to trial at the Punjab High Court, Peterhof, Shimla. Where he was sentenced to death on 8 November 1949. Although two sons of Gandhi, Manilal Gandhi, and Ramdas Gandhi, submitted arguments for reduction of sentence, which were turned down by the Government of India. After which Godse was hanged on 15 November 1949 in Ambala.
