The Book “Watershed: How We Destroyed India’s Water and How We Can Save It” by Mridula Ramesh launched

Recently, Mridula Ramesh has launched a new book titled “Watershed: How We Destroyed India’s Water and How We Can Save It”. Mridula is the founder of Ramesh Sundaram Climate Institute, which works on water and waste solutions and is an angel investor in cleantech start-ups.

Mridula Ramesh has also written another book “The Climate Solution”. She writes regularly on climate issues. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), India and the Chairperson of the Board of Governors at the National Institute of Technology, Andhra Pradesh (AP).

Mridula Ramesh has warned that the water crisis in India may deepen further. This book throws light on the factors that have led India to this crisis. In this book with a history of 5000 years, topics like extreme weather events and farmers’ protests in the country today, geopolitics related to water, clean technology have also been mentioned.

The book published by ‘Hatchet India’ states, “The way crops are grown in India has changed in the last 150 years. From a predominantly millet growing country in the 19th century, we have now become rice and wheat-producing country.”

The book states, “This transformation requires huge spending on dams and canals, which naturally makes urban water supplies expensive.

Given India’s growing population, urbanization and wealth, almost half of India’s total water demand will not be met by 2030.” Ramesh has said that a hydrographic survey should be started with regard to water supply, rainwater harvesting capacity, wastage of water, treated and reused water.
