Every year 26 November is celebrated as Constitution Day to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. The constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 and it came into force on 26 January 1950.

In 2015, as the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had notified the Central Government’s decision to celebrate this day as ‘Constitution Day’ on 26 November. This day is celebrated to promote a sense of respect among the citizens for the constitutional values.

Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the first Law Minister of India, was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee in 1947 and was given the responsibility of writing the Constitution of the country. American historian Granville Seward Austin called the constitution prepared by Ambedkar ‘first and foremost a social document’.

India, spread from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, has different languages, dialects, clothes, food and other variations. In such a situation, the Constitution is the only link that keeps every Indian citizen connected. The constitution gives equal rights to every citizen of the country and binds them to the same rules.

It took 2 years, 11 months 18 days to prepare the constitution. It was completed on November 26, 1949. This Constitution of the Republic of India came into force on 26 January 1950.

The original copies of the Constitution were written in two languages, Hindi and English. They are still kept safe in the helium-filled boxes in the Parliament of India.

 

The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950. India celebrates this day as Republic Day.

The hand-written constitution was signed by 284 members of the Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950, including 15 women. Two days later, from January 26, this constitution came into force in the country.

Constitution – Divided into 25 parts, 470 articles and 12 lists, the Indian Constitution is the largest written constitution in the world.

Originally, the Indian Constitution had a total of 395 articles (divided into 22 parts) and 8 schedules, but as a result of various amendments, at present, it has a total of 470 articles (divided into 25 parts) and 12 schedules. Fundamental rights are described in the third part of the constitution.
