Pandit Birju Maharaj Passed Away: Famous Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj has passed away at the age of 83 due to a heart attack. Padma Vibhushan awardee Birju Maharaj breathed his last on Sunday night. The information of which was given by Birju Maharaj’s grandson Swaransh Mishra through social media.
Birth:
Birju Maharaj was born on 4 February 1938 in the ‘Kalka-Bindadin Gharana’ of Lucknow. The original name of Birju Maharaj was Dukhharan. Which later changed to ‘Brijmohan Nath Mishra’. His father’s name was Jagannath Maharaj, who was from ‘Lucknow Gharana’ and he was known as Achchan Maharaj.
It is believed that in the hospital where Birju Maharaj was born, all other girls were born there except him, that is why he was named Brijmohan. Which later became ‘Birju’ and then ‘Birju Maharaj’.

Birju Maharaj as Teacher
Birju Maharaj started teaching dance at the age of 13 at Sangeet Bharati in Delhi. After that, he started teaching at the Indian Art Center in Delhi itself. After this, a theatre school was opened in Delhi itself by the name of Kalashram.
Prize:
Birju Maharaj was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1986. He has received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. Along with this, Birju Maharaj received honorary doctorate degrees from Banaras Hindu University and Khairagarh University.
In the year 2016, he received the Filmfare Award for choreography for the song ‘Mohe Rang Do Lal’ in the Hindi film Bajirao Mastani. He received the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2002. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Choreography for ‘Vishwaroopam’ in the year 2012 and Best Choreography for ‘Bajirao Mastani’ in 2016.
