Amit Palekar: Amit Palekar is a well-known lawyer of Goa and has been doing social work there for a long time. Palekar caught everyone’s attention, including Kejriwal when he joined the hunger strike started by ‘The Save Old Goa Action Committee’ (SOGAC). This committee was demanding the demolition of an illegal bungalow being built within the Old Goa UNESCO Heritage Zone.

Palekar comes from the Bhandari community, which is considered a big factor between defeat and victory in Goa politics. The biggest reason behind this is the number of people in this society in the state. At present, the Bhandari community accounts for 35 per cent of the total population of Goa. In such a situation, the Aam Aadmi Party has tried to cultivate a large number of communities by choosing its leader from this society.
Kejriwal said, ‘Bhandari community is an important part of the community of Goa, but it is very hurt. It is the society with the largest share in the total population, but in the last 60 years, only one person has become the chief minister of this community. We are ending this injustice.
