Women Marriage Age Act: The Government will introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and consequently bring amendments to the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
Women Marriage Age Act: Recently, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to increase the age of marriage of a woman from 18 years to 21 years. This was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address last year. The legal age of marriage for men in the country is only 21 years.
According to media reports, after getting the cabinet’s approval on Wednesday, the government will bring a law to amend the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006, along with amendments to the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act 1955.
After the recommendation made by the Central Task Force headed by Jaya Jaitley to NITI Aayog in December 2020 to amend the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006, the cabinet has approved it. The Center’s task force has been constituted to examine issues related to the age of motherhood, reducing maternal mortality rate (MMR), improving nutritional status and related issues. NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul was included in the task force formed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in June 2020.
The task force has suggested that girls should have access to schools and universities and sex education should be included in the school curriculum. Emphasis has been laid on the empowerment of women.
In 1978, the age of marriage of a woman was increased from 15 to 18 years. As India progressed on the path of development, avenues of education and career also opened up for women.

मीडिया रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, बुधवार को कैबिनेट की मंजूरी मिलने के बाद सरकार बाल विवाह निषेध अधिनियम 2006 में संशोधन का कानून लाएगी और इसके साथ ही स्पेशल मैरिज एक्ट और पर्सनल लॉ जैसे हिंदू मैरिज एक्ट 1955 में भी संशोधन किया जाएगा|
बाल विवाह निषेध अधिनियम 2006 में संशोधन के लिए जया जेटली की अध्यक्षता में बनी केंद्र की टास्क फोर्स द्वारा दिसंबर 2020 में नीति आयोग से की गई सिफारिश के बाद कैबिनेट ने इस पर मुहर लगाई है| मां बनने की उम्र से संबंधित समस्याएं, मातृ मृत्यु दर (MMR) को कम करने, पोषण स्तर में सुधार और संबंधित मुद्दों की जांच करने के लिए केंद्र की टास्क फोर्स का गठन किया गया| महिला एवं बाल विकास मंत्रालय की ओर से जून 2020 में बनाई गई टास्क फोर्स में नीति आयोग के सदस्य डॉ. वीके पॉल शामिल थे|
टास्क फोर्स ने सुझाव दिया है कि स्कूल और विश्वविद्यालय तक लड़कियों की पहुंच होनी चाहिए ओर सेक्स एजुकेशन भी होना चाहिए और उसे स्कूल के पाठ्यक्रम में शामिल किया जाना चाहिए| महिलाओं के सशक्तीकरण पर जोर दिया गया है|
सन 1978 में महिला के शादी की उम्र 15 से बढ़ाकर 18 साल की गई थी| जैसे जैसे भारत विकास पथ पर बढ़ता गया, महिलाओं के लिए शिक्षा और करियर के रास्ते भी खुलते गए|
