The Central Government has changed the name of the Khel Ratna Award to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Earlier this award was in the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave this information through a tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that I have been receiving many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. Honouring his spirit, the Khel Ratna Award will be known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
PM Modi said that Major Dhyan Chand was one of the leading sportspersons of India, who brought India honour and glory all over the world. It is absolutely right that the highest sports honour of our country should be named after him.

The government’s decision came a day after the Indian hockey team won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Keep in mind that the Indian hockey team has won a medal in the Olympics after 41 years. Before this, India last won a medal in Olympic hockey in 1980.
केंद्र सरकार ने खेल रत्न पुरस्कार का नाम बदलकर मेजर ध्यानचंद खेल रत्न पुरस्कार कर दिया है| इससे पहले यह अवॉर्ड पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी के नाम पर था| प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने ट्वीट के जरिए इसकी जानकारी दी|
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने कहा कि मुझे पूरे भारत के नागरिकों से खेल रत्न पुरस्कार का नाम मेजर ध्यानचंद के नाम पर रखने के लिए कई अनुरोध प्राप्त हो रहे हैं| उनकी भावना का सम्मान करते हुए, खेल रत्न पुरस्कार को मेजर ध्यानचंद खेल रत्न पुरस्कार के नाम से जाना जाएगा|
पीएम मोदी ने कहा कि मेजर ध्यानचंद भारत के उन अग्रणी खिलाड़ियों में से थे, जिन्होंने भारत को दुनियाभर में सम्मान और गौरव दिलाया| यह बिल्कुल ठीक है कि हमारे देश के सर्वोच्च खेल सम्मान का नाम उन्हीं के नाम पर रखा जाए|
खेल रत्न अवॉर्ड देश का सबसे बड़ा खेल सम्मान है| जो पहली बार 1991-92 में दिया गया था। इसे अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर खेल क्षेत्र में शानदार और सबसे उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन के लिए दिया जाता है|
सरकार का यह फैसला टोक्यो ओलंपिक में भारतीय हॉकी टीम के कांस्य पद जीतने के बाद एक दिन बाद लिया गया। ध्यान रहे कि भारतीय हॉकी टीम ने 41 साल बाद ओलंपिक में पदक जीता है| इससे पहले भारत ने आखिरी बार ओलंपिक हॉकी में 1980 में पदक जीता था|
