A cup of golden rice can provide up to 40 percent of the vitamin A required for children aged six months to five years, which will be very effective in fighting childhood blindness and saving lives in developing countries.
Recently, the Philippines has become the first country in the world to receive approval for the commercial production of genetically modified “golden rice”. Golden rice is a variety of rice rich in nutrients to help reduce childhood malnutrition.
Golden rice has been developed by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) after spending nearly two decades.

हाल ही मे, फ़िलीपीन्स आनुवंशिक रूप से संशोधित “गोल्डन राइस (golden rice)” के व्यावसायिक उत्पादन के लिए अनुमोदन प्राप्त करने वाला दुनिया का पहला देश बन गया है| गोल्डन राइस बचपन के कुपोषण (malnutrition) को कम करने में मदद करने के लिए पोषक तत्वों से भरपूर चावल की एक किस्म है|
गोल्डन चावल को कृषि विभाग-फिलीपीन चावल अनुसंधान संस्थान (DA-PhilRice) द्वारा अंतर्राष्ट्रीय चावल अनुसंधान संस्थान (IRRI) के साथ साझेदारी में लगभग दो दशक बिताने के बाद विकसित किया है|
इन चावल के चमकीले पीले रंग के कारण इसे गोल्डन राइस कहा जाता है| एक कप सुनहरा चावल 40 प्रतिशत तक विटामिन ए दे सकता है जो कि छह महीने से पांच साल की उम्र के बच्चों के लिए बहुत जरूरी है, बचपन के अंधेपन (childhood blindness) से लड़ने और विकासशील देशों में जीवन बचाने के लिए बहुत कारगर साबित होगा|
