The consumer movement marks 15th March with World Consumer Rights Day every year, as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights.
Every year, World Consumer Rights Day is observed on the 15th of March worldwide. World Consumer Rights were first observed on 15 March 1983.
The aim of celebrating World Consumer Rights Day is to make consumers aware of their rights. A consumer should also be aware that if he is spending on anything, then his loss is not happening anywhere.
The consumer movement was first introduced in the US by Ralph Nader, which led to the approval of a bill on consumer protection introduced by then-President John F. Kennedy in the US Congress on 15 March 1962. There were four special provisions in the Bill which included the right to consumer protection, the right to receive information, the right to elect a consumer and the right to convenience. Later 4 more officers were added to it.
The consumer movement in India started in 1966 from Maharashtra. After the establishment of the Ghatak Panchayat in Pune in the year 1974, institutions for consumer welfare were formed in many states and this movement increased. On 9 December 1986, the Consumer Protection Bill was passed on the initiative of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

(विश्व उपभोक्ता अधिकार दिवस को मनाने का उद्देश्य है कि उपभोक्ता अपने अधिकारों के प्रति जागरूक हों | एक उपभोक्ता को इस बात की भी जानकारी होनी चाहिए कि वह अगर किसी भी चीज पर खर्च करा रहा है, तो कहीं उसका नुकसान नहीं हो रहा है |)
(पहली बार अमेरिका में रल्प नाडेर द्वारा उपभोक्ता आंदोलन की शुरुआत की गई, जिसके फलस्वरूप 15 मार्च 1962 को अमेरिकी कांग्रेस में तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति जॉन एफ कैनेडी द्वारा उपभोक्ता संरक्षण पर पेश किए गए विधेयक पर अनुमोदन दिया। इस विधेयक में चार विशेष प्रावधान थे जिसमें – उपभोक्ता सुरक्षा के अधिकार, सूचना प्राप्त करने का अधिकार, उपभोक्ता को चुनाव करने का अधिकार और सुवनाई का अधिकार शामिल था। बाद में इसमें 4 और अधिकारों को जोड़ा गया था।)
(भारत में उपभोक्ता आंदोलन की शुरुआत 1966 में महाराष्ट्र से मनी जाती है | वर्ष 1974 में पुणे में ग्राहक पंचायत की स्थापना के बाद अनेक राज्यों में उपभोक्ता कल्याण के लिए संस्थाओं का गठन किया गया और यह आंदोलन बढ़ता गया | 9 दिसंबर 1986 को तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी की पहल पर उपभोक्ता संरक्षण विधेयक पारित किया गया था |)
