Kerala Opens its First Human Milk Bank
The Kerala first human milk bank was inaugurated at the Ernakulam General Hospital by Health Minister K.K. Shylaja on 05 February. 


Recently, the state of Kerala opened its first Human Milk Bank (HMB) on 5 February 2021. It is a state-of-the-art facility, which was inaugurated at Kerala Health Minister KK Selja Ernakulam General Hospital. It has been established in collaboration with Rotary Club of Cochin Global.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the state Health Department with the Rotary Club of Cochin Global in 2020 costing Rs 3.5 million. The Pediatrician Association (IAP) will provide trained nursing staff to operate the milk bank.

  • The concept of this milk bank was started 32 years ago in India, but there was no milk bank in Kerala till now.
  • Milk will be stored and provided to the needy children as per government guidelines as per all safety rules and procedures.
  • The purpose of breast milk bank is that newborns who are not sick or dead or who are not breastfeeding due to insufficient breast milk production can get breast milk.
  • The collected milk can be stored safely in the bank for 6 months.
  • Initially, children admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be provided milk for free.
  • It will be planned to establish a hospital network for multiple collection and safe delivery points.
  • Milk will be donated by delivery mothers in the hospital, these mothers will get all health statistics in the hospital.
  • Human Milk Bank consists of a pasteurization unit, deep freezer, refrigerator, disinfection equipment, reverse osmosis equipment and computers.

(हाल ही मे, केरल राज्य ने 5 फरवरी, 2021 को अपना पहला ह्यूमन मिल्क बैंक (HMB) खोला है | यह एक अत्याधुनिक सुविधा है, जिसका उदघाटन केरल के स्वास्थ्य मंत्री केके शैलजा एर्नाकुलम जनरल अस्पताल में किया | रोटरी क्लब ऑफ कोचीन ग्लोबल के सहयोग से इसकी स्थापना की गई है |)

  • इस मिल्क बैंक की अवधारणा 32 साल पहले भारत में शुरू की गई थी, लेकिन केरल में अब तक कोई मिल्क बैंक नहीं थी | 
  • सरकारी दिशानिर्देशों के अनुसार जरूरतमंद बच्चों को सभी सुरक्षा नियमों और प्रक्रियाओं के अनुसार दूध संग्रहित और प्रदान किया जाएगा |
  • ब्रैस्ट मिल्क बैंक का उद्देश्य है कि नवजात शिशु जो बीमार या मृत नहीं हैं या जो अपर्याप्त स्तन दूध उत्पादन के कारण स्तनपान नहीं कर रहे हैं, स्तन दूध प्राप्त कर सकते हैं | 
  • एकत्रित दूध को 6 महीने तक बैंक में सुरक्षित रूप से संग्रहित किया जा सकेगा | 
  • प्रारंभ में, नीओनेटल इंटेंसिव केयर यूनिट में भर्ती बच्चों को मुफ्त में दूध उपलब्ध कराया जाएगा |
  • कई संग्रह और सुरक्षित वितरण बिंदुओं के लिए एक अस्पताल नेटवर्क स्थापित करने की योजना बनाई जाएगी |
  • अस्पताल में डिलीवरी माताओं द्वारा दूध दान किया जाएगा, इन माताओं को अस्पताल में सभी स्वास्थ्य आँकड़े मिलेंगे |
  • ह्यूमन मिल्क बैंक में एक पाश्चुरीकरण इकाई, डीप फ्रीजर, रेफ्रिजरेटर, कीटाणुशोधन उपकरण, रिवर्स ऑस्मोसिस उपकरण और कंप्यूटर शामिल हैं |
