Myanmar MPs were to gather in the capital Nayapita on Monday for the first session of Parliament since last year's election, but the Myanmar army mounted a coup, accusing them of rigging the election.

American expressed concern over the coup, White House spokeswoman Jane Saki said: "Burmese forces have taken steps to ease the country's democratic transition, including the arrest of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and other city officials."
