Answer Highlights – Top Current Affairs 23 May 2020


(1) 22 May
International Biodiversity Day is observed by the United Nations on 22 May every year to raise awareness about the subject of significant reduction in biological diversity due to some human activities. Biological diversity includes plants, animals, and microorganisms of various species, including genetic differences within each species, eg, varieties of crops and breeds of animals.


(2) Union Human Resource Development Minister 
Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched the online MA (Hindi) program of IGNOU through a Facebook Live session. During the launch session, the Minister said that this program would strengthen our ‘Padhe India Online’ initiative, and also appreciated the role of IGNOU in promoting online education.

(3) Chhattisgarh
The Government of Chhattisgarh has launched the “Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyaya Yojana” on the occasion of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This farmer-centric scheme aims to stimulate the rural economy in the state amidst the COVID-19 epidemic. The scheme was provisioned in the 2020–21 budget. The scheme is expected to benefit more than 1.87 million farmers.

(4) Uttar Pradesh
The Government of Uttar Pradesh has established ‘UP Start-up Fund’ under the Start-up Policy 2017 with UP Information Technology. For this an agreement has been signed between the Government of Uttar Pradesh and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), in which the fund will be managed by SIDBI. An initial contribution of Rs 15 crore has been passed in this fund. The main objective of this fund will be to support registered start-up ventures in various sectors in Uttar Pradesh.

(5) UNICEF
UNICEF and Airtel Africa have partnered to help children and families affected by COVID-19. The partnership between the two aims to provide access to distance education to children and to provide cash assistance to their families through mobile cash transfers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to West Bengal, announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the families of those who lost their lives during a trip to West Bengal to assess the damage caused by the cyclone Amfan.

On May 21, 2020, US President Donald Trump announced that he was planning to withdraw the US from the Open Skies Treaty with Russia. An 18-year treaty was signed between the two superpowers to improve military transparency and confidence.

The open-sky treaty was signed on 1 January 2002. The treaty has 35 signatories, including Russia, US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Unarmed aerial surveillance flights are permitted throughout the territory of the countries participating in the treaty.
(9) Kyrgyzstan 
The open-sky treaty was signed on 1 January 2002. The treaty has 35 signatories, including Russia, US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Unarmed aerial surveillance flights are permitted throughout the territory of the countries participating in the treaty.
(10) 2.32 pecent
New York-based private equity firm KKR has decided to invest INR 11367 crore or USD 1.5 billion in Jio platforms for a 2.32% stake. The deal will be finalized after receiving all regulatory and customary approvals. This is the fifth investment in Reliance Jio, followed by Facebook, Silver Lake, Vista Equity Partners and General Atlantic.
(11) 40 Bps
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduces the repo rate from 40% to 4% on May 22 from 4.4%. The Central Bank also adjusted the reverse repo rate from 3.75% to 3.35%. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das made this announcement.
(12) French Open
Former World no. 1st and four-time Grand Slam singles champion, Ashley Cooper recently passed away at the age of 83 after a long illness. Cooper had won three of the four at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Championships in 1958. His only loss at the Grand Slam that year was in the semi-finals at the French Open.
